The Athenian Academy

Summer Science Lab Series

Introduction to Dissection

Elementary and Middle School Aged students will have the opportunity to do hands-on, real dissections.  Each day students will be introduced to a new creature, learn about their habitats and physiology and then work with the specimen using appropriate dissection tools.  (Younger students with less developed fine motor skills will not work with scalpels.)

Specimens to include:

Earthworm

Starfish

Perch

Frog

May 29-June 1, 10:00 -12:00

$70 - includes specimens and all materials

Chemistry Lab

Aimed at upper elementary and middle school students (grades 5-8), each week will include a new concept introduced through a hands on exciting lab activity.  Students will use legitimate lab tools, complete lab reports.  This goes beyond the traditional baking soda and vinegar.  This is sure to engage even the most school-avoidant students.

Topics to be covered:

Making Hydrogen Gas

pH and Neutralization

Separating a Compound

Conservation of Matter

May 29-June 1, 2:00-4:00

$75 - includes all lab supplies and materials

Dissection 2

Elementary and Middle School Aged students who have previous dissection experience may want to dig even deeper!  This session will include specimens less typically found in school dissection classes.  We will continue to be introduced to a new creature each time, learn about their habitats and physiology and then work with the specimen using appropriate dissection tools.  (Younger students with less developed fine motor skills will not work with scalpels.)

Specimens to include:

Shark

Squid

Snake

Crawfish

June 5-June 8, 10:00-12:00

$85 - includes specimens and all materials

Physics Lab

Students learn the why and how of the everyday world around them.  After this session, students will recognize concepts of physical science in the world they live in.  This class is geared towards upper elementary through middle school students (grades 5-8).

Topics to be covered:

Insulation

Concave & Convex Lenses

Electrical Circuits

Magnets & Electromagnets

June 5- June 8

$65 - includes lab supplies and materials
